Elämää Alexandrassa//Life in Alexandra

Elämä täällä Alexandrassa sujuu kahden viikon jälkeen melko tutulla kaavalla. Herään aamulla seitsemältä, ennen kuin kukaan muu on hereillä. Näin saan valmistaa aamiaisen rauhassa. Vartin päästä keittiöön rynnii kymmenen ihmistä ja ehdin livahtaa syömään, kun muut valmistavat aamiaisensa toisiaan väistellen. Minä ja kaksi saksalaista poikaa menemme kahdeksaksi töihin, kuten suurin osa reilusta 30 ihmisestä hostellissa. Aamulla käy kova kuhina, kun kaikki koittavat selviytyä aamutoimistaan kolmen vessan ja kahden keittiön kanssa.

The days here in Alexandra are pretty similar after two weeks. I wake up at seven before no one else is up. This way I get to prepare my breakfast in peace. 15 minutes after that, ten people walks in and I get to eat while they prepare their breakfast dodging each other. Me and two German guys go to work at eight and so does most of the 30 people staying in the hostel. The mornings are busy when everyone tries to get through their morning using three bathrooms and two kitchens.

Töissä ohennamme aprikoosi- ja persikkapuita sekä viiniköynnöksiä. Viiniköynnökset on suosikkini, koska ne ovat sopivan kokoisia minulle; ei tarvitse kurkottaa tai kyykistyä. Toisaalta puiden ohentamisessa pääsee kiipeilemään tikkaille, joka tuo pientä vaihtelua päivään. Töitä tehdään kahdeksan tuntia ja lisäksi on puolen tunnin ruokatauko. Päivä rytmittyy taukojen mukaan. Aamulla odottaa ensimmäistä taukoa, joka on kymmeneltä. Sitten lounastaukoa puoliltapäivin ja lopuksi iltapäivätaukoa. Puolet tauosta tosin yleensä kuluu siihen, että ensin kävelee puiden luota tavaroilleen, jotka on aina väärällä puolella hedelmätarhaa. Jos haluaa käydä vessassa ja syödä jotain, on syömistä välillä tehtävä samalla, kun kävelee vessaan. Vessatkin kun tuppaa olemaan aina toisella puolella tarhaa.

At work we thin apricot and peach trees and sometimes vineyards as well. Vineyards are my favorite because they are the perfect height. I don't have to reach too high or squat in order to thin them.On the other hand, you get to climb the latter when thinning trees, which brings variety to the day. We work eight hours a day and have half an hour lunch break. The rhythm of my work days is waiting for the next break. In the morning you wait for the first break which is at ten o'clock. Then for the lunch break and finally for the afternoon break. When you walk from the trees to your stuff, which are almost always at the different side of the orchid, that's usually half of the break. If you want to eat and use the bathroom, you sometimes need to eat as you walk, since the bathrooms are also on the other side of the orchid.

Työ itsessään on tylsää ja siihen rutinoituu äkkiä. Välillä huomaa tehneensä rivin puita ilman minkäänlaista ajatusta mielessä ja välillä jokainen minuutti tuntuu pitkältä. Kuitenkin sain, mitä tulinkin hakemaan: työtä ilman vastuuta, stressiä ja jatkuvaa tilannetajua.

The job itself is boring and you do it automatically. Sometimes you realize you've done a row of trees without a single thought on your mind. Other times every minute feels long. But I got what I came for; a job without responsibility, stress and constant discretion.

Työpäivät menevät siedettävän äkkiä, jos kuuntelee äänikirjoja ja musiikkia tai pystyy juttelemaan jonkun kanssa työn lomassa. Paljon myös ehtii pohdiskella omaa elämää, mikä aiheuttaa välillä pientä ahdistusta. En kuitenkaan ole ainoa työtään ja elämäänsä pakeneva ihminen hostellilla. Lisäkseni on muun muassa kolme muuta opettajaa, jotka kaipasivat breikkiä töistä ja tulivat miettimään, mitä haluavat tehdä. Yllättävää onkin, että suurin osa meistä on reilusti päälle kaksikymppisiä ja vielä teinivuosiaan eläviä on vain kaksi.

The work days passes quite quickly if you listen to music, audio books or talk to someone. There's also a lot of time to think about your life which causes a bit of anxiety at times. I'm not the only one escaping their life and work at the hostel though. There's three other teachers among other ones who needed a break from work and came here to think what they want to do. It is surprising that the majority of us are over twenty and there's only two still in their teenage years.

Alexandra kaupunkina on hyvin hiljainen maalaiskaupunki. Asukkaita on 4800 ja olen tainnut törmätä noin kahteenkymmeneen heistä. Kun päivällä kävelee keskustassa, tulee vastaan vain muutama ihminen. Suurin osa kaupoista menee kiinni viideltä, juuri kun pääsen itse töistä kotiin. Paikalliseen pubiin ei pääse puolenyön jälkeen sisään, vaikka baari on kolmeen asti auki. Baarissa käydään kumisaappaat jalassa ja 95% asiakkaista on miehiä. Keskustassa on suuri puisto, jossa saan yksinäni käydä treenaamassa, koska kukaan muu ei näytä käyttävän sitä.

As a town, Alexandra is very quiet country town. There's 4800 inhabitants and I've come across about twenty of them. When you walk around in the town during daytime, you only run into few people. Most shops close at five, just when I get home from work. You can't get into the local pub after 12am although it doesn't close until 3am. People wear gum boots to the bar and 95% of the customers there are men. There's a big park in the center where I get to do a work out in peace since no one else uses it apparently.

Hassua kyllä, kaupungin ollessa hiljainen, elämä hostellissa on vilkasta. Vaikka välillä omaa rauhaa on vaikea saada ja ainainen kilpajuoksu töistä suihkuun on rasittavaa (lämmintä vettä ei riitä kaikille), on silti mukavaa, että seuraa ja keskustelukumppaneita riittää aina.

Funny enough, the town being quiet, the life in the hostel is very lively. Even though you can't really get a time of your own and the race from work to shower is annoying (there's not enough hot water for everyone), it's still nice to have company and someone to talk to all the time.

Alexandra - koti kaukana kotoa//Alexandra - home away from home

Istun hostellin takapihalla lukemassa kirjaa. Ulkona on 14 astetta lämmintä. Normaalisti en istuisi näin kylmällä ulkona, mutta jokin täällä Uudessa Seelannissa tekee sen, että ulos on päästävä aina, kun mahdollista.

I'm sitting outside in the garden, reading a book. It's 14 degrees celsius outside. Normally I wouldn't be sitting outside when it's this cold but there's something about New Zealand that makes you want to spend your time outdoors.

Takanani istuu eteläkorealainen Miya soittamassa ukulelea ja kauempaa kuulu didgeridoon ääni, jota soittaa myöskin eteläkorealainen Seen. Takapiha on ränsistynyt. Nurmikko on pitkä ja ulkokalusteet ovat ikivanhoja rikkinäisiä huonekaluja. Se ei kuitenkaan haittaa, olen kotona. Täällä tulen viettämään ainakin seuraavat neljä viikkoa.

Sitting outside with me while playing ukulele is south Korean Miya. From the distance, I can hear the sound of didgeridoo that is played by another South Korean, Seen. The garden is a bit shabby. The crass is long and the furniture are old and broken. But I don't mind, I'm home. This is where I'll be living for at least the next four weeks.

Pohjoisreissumme jälkeen lensin Queenstowniin, joka oli ensikosketukseni eteläsaareen. Oli kuin olisin matkustanut uuteen maahan. Lumihuippuiset vuoret ympäröivät kaupunkia ja oli kylmä, vain 6 astetta. Upeat vuoret veivät kuitenkin huomion pois kylmyydestä.

After our roadtrip to Northland I flew to Queenstown, which was my first experience of the south island. It was like arriving to a different country. The town was surrounded by snowcapped mountains and it was cold, only 6 degrees. The breath taking mountains took away my thoughts off the cold though.

Vietin kaksi päivää Queenstownissa patkoiden kahdelle kukkulalle ja koluten kaupungin lukuisat retkeilyvälineliikkeet läpi. Kaupunki oli niin kaunis ja kotoisan tuntuinen, että siellä oli ihana vain kävellä ympäriinsä.

I spent two days in Queenstown hiking to two hills and browsing through every outdoor shop. The town was so beautiful and cozy that it was just nice to walk around.

Seuraavaksi tarkoitukseni oli liftata Wanakaan, mutta aamupalalla ollessani juttelin erään saksalaisen miehen kanssa työskentelystä Uudessa Seelannissa ja hän kertoi, että läheisessä kaupungissa, Alexandrassa, on paljon hedelmätarhatyötä, joten päätinkin mennä sinne.

My next plan was to hitch hike to Wanaka, but as I was eating breakfast I talked to this german guy about jobs in New Zealand and he told me about a town called Alexandra, where there are lots of jobs at the orchids. So I decided to go there instead.

Kaupungissa on vain yksi hostelli, johon mennessäni tuntui, kuin olisin tullut kotiin. Tunsin, että täältä tulen löytämään töitä ja hostellissa tapaamani muut asukkaat olivat superystävällisiä ja lupasivat kysellä omilta työpaikoiltaan minulle töitä. Neljän päivän päästä työpaikka varmistuikin läheiseltä hedelmätarhalta.

There is only one hostel in Alexandra and as I walked in, it felt like I arrived home. I could feel this is the place where I'll find work and also the people in the hostel were super friendly and helpful with my job hunt. After four days, I got a job at a local orchid.

Töitä etsiessäni ehdin myös piipahtaa Wanakassa ja hullaantua kaupunkiin täysin. Ystäväni Matan oli kehunut paikkaa maasta taivaisiin enkä uskonut paikan olevan niin ihmeellinen, mutta se oli. Kaupunki on pieni,  järven rannalla ja sitä ympäröi upeat vuoret ja lukuisat patikointireitit. Hetken jo harkitsin muuttamista sinne ja töiden hankkimista sieltä, mutta kun kuulin hostellien hinnat, päätin Akexandran nuhjuisen, mutta lämpöisen hostellin olevan minun paikkani. Hostellissa vallitsee hyvä henki asukkaiden kesken ja olen tyytyväinen, että jäin tänne.

As I was looking for work, I managed to finally visit Wanaka as well and fall in love with the town. My friend Matan had told me it's heaven on earth but I didn't think it could be that amazing. But it was. The town is next to a lake and it's surrounded by beautiful mountains. It's a small town with a great atmosphere and lots of hikes close by. For a while I was considering to move and find a job there but when I heard the hostel prices in Wanaka, I decided Alexandra's shabby but cozy hostel would be my place. There is good atmosphere among us backpackers in this hostel and I'm glad I stayed.
