Cherry season finished and I spent few weeks in Clyde chilling and working for accommodation.
Viikko sitten otimme kaverini Kaden kanssa uudelleensijoitettavan vuokra-auton alle ja lähdimme kolme päivän roadtripille. Saimme siis vuokra-auton ilmaiseksi, koska se piti saada siirrettyä toiseen kaupunkiin. Bensat piti maksaa itse, mutta muuten saimme kahden vuorokauden aikana ajella, minne halusimme.
A week ago my friend Kade and I booked a relocation car and went for a three day road trip. We got the car for free since the rental company needed it to be moved to a different city. We had to pay the gas ourselves but we got to drive as much as we wanted during those three days.
Jostain syystä pidän roadtripeistä ja pitkistä automatkoista, vaikken teekään niitä usein. Roadtrip Uudessa Seelannissa on kuitenkin ihan omaa luokkaansa, sillä maisemat ovat toinen toistaan upeampia ja ikinä ei tiedä, mitä tie tuo tullessaan, kuten alla olevasta kuvasta näkyy. Sadepilvet kerääntyivät taivaalla, mutta jostain raosta kuitenkin pilkisti aurinko ja valaisi pellon kullankirkkaaksi.
For some reason I love road trips and sitting in the car for long distances though I don't do it often. Roadtrip in New Zealand is a very unique experience because the scenery is so beautiful and you never know where the road will bring you to, as you can see from the picture below. The rain clouds had gathered in the sky but still the sun managed to shine trough on the field coloring in golden.
Ensimmäisenä iltana kävimme Oamarussa katsomassa sinipingviinejä. Ne oli noin 40cm korkuisia miniotuksia ja seurasimme aitiosta, kuinka ne rantautuivat merestä ja juoksivat koti-koloihinsa.
On our first night we drove to Oamaru to see blue penguins. They are about 40cm tall tiny creatures and we watched from the audience how they came shore and ran to their homes.
Seuraavana aamuna suuntasimme Mt Cookin kansallispuistoon, jossa olen jo käynyt kerran ennenkin. Paikka on kuitenkin lempparini tässä maassa, joten menin sinne mielelläni uudestaan. Teimme osan patikkareitistä, joten en viimeksi pystynyt tekemään kovan tuulen vuoksi.
Next morning we headed to Mt Cook National park, where I've been once before. That place is my favorite one in New Zealand so I didn't mind going there again. We managed to do a part of a track I couldn't do the last time because of the strong wind.
Mt Cookilta olikin sitten monen tunnin ajomatka Christchurchiin, johon meidän oli saavuttava saman illan aikana. Aamulla oli palautettava auto ja haettava Kadelle toinen uudelleen sijoitettava auto, koska hänen oli palattava takaisin Clydeen töihin.
From Mt Cook it was a several hour drive to Christchurch where we had to arrive that evening in order to drop off the car in the morning. We also had to pick up another relocation car for Kade so he could drive back to work in Clyde.
Sunnuntai-aamuna jäin siis Christchurchiin ja olin taas reissussa yksin. Ensituntuma kaupungista oli, että se oli tyhjä ja vaikeasti lähestyttävä, koska joka puolella tehdään rakennustöitä. Christchurch koki pahan maanjäristyksen vuonna 2011 eikä jälleenrakennus ole vieläkään valmis. Ja kuin kaupunki ei olisi jo kärsinyt tarpeeksi, siellä ollessani kaupungissa syttyi suuri tulipalo, joka kesti useita päiviä tuhoten koteja.
So on sunday i was in Christchurch and on the road alone again. My first impression of Christchurch wasn't that good since there was construction work everywhere. The city was badly damaged in an earthquake in 2011 and they still have a lot of rebuilding to be done. And like the city hadn't suffered enough already, there was a big fire on my first day there that lasted for days destroying homes.
The 185 white chairs represents the lives lost in the earthquake.
Kun kiertelin kaupungissa, sieltä löytyikin paljon mielenkiintoisia yksityiskohtia. Paljon erilaista taideteoksia oli ripoteltu sinne tänne ja suuria graffiteja löytyi useasta nurkasta. Kasvitieteellinen puutarha oli myöskin suuri ja upea ja siellä oli hauska viettää kuuma päivä.
When I walked around the city I found a lot of interesting details there. You could find a lot of different art pieces around the city and large graffitis. The botanic farden was also beautiful and a good place to spend a hot summer day.
Kaksi päivää kaupungissa kuitenkin riitti hyvin. Tuntui, ettei siellä ollut paljon elämää eikä ihme; kaupat, kahvilat ja ravintolat oli ripoteltu sinne tänne ja seuraavaa sai aina etsiä. Christchurch tuntuukin olevan kaupunki, joka jakaa jyrkästi mielipiteitä. Itse olin tyytyväinen päästessäni jatkamaan matkaa.
Two days in the city was enough though. It felt like there wasn't much life there and no wonder: all the shops, restaurants and cafes were spread around the city and you always had to look for the next one. Christchurch seems to be a city that people either love or hate. I was happy to move on from there.
