Viimeiset vuorinäkymät//Last views from the mountains

Christchurchista suuntasin eteläsaaren pohjoisosaan, joka on maisemiltaan aivan erilainen kuin eteläosa. Vuoret jäivät taakse ja maisemissa näkyy vain vihreitä mäkiä. Ilmasto on kuuma ja trooppinen ja se tuoksuukin erilaiselta. Rannikolla maisemat muistuttavat Australiaa.

From Christchurch I headed to the northern part of the south island. The north part turned out to be quite different from the south. There weren't any mountains, just green lush hills. The air is hot and tropical and it even smells different. The scenery on the coast reminds me of Australia.

Viimeisen kunnon vuoripatikoinnin tein Artturin solassa ja se olikin elämäni rankin patikka. Kiipesimme 1833 metrin korkeuteen, tosin aloitimme 700 metristä, joten itse kiipeämistä oli vain 1100 metriä. Polku ylös oli kuitenkin älyttömän jyrkkä ja välillä kulku oli pelkkää kiipeilyä suurien kivilohkareiden päällä. Vähän väliä piti auttaa käsillä, että pääsi ylös, sen verran jyrkkää mäkeä mentiin. Yleensä tykkään patikoida yksin, mutta koska reitti tuntui hieman riskialttiilta, tuppauduin muutaman muun ihmisen seuraan. Kolmen tunnin kiipeämisen jälkeen olimme huipulla ja sieltä avautui näkymät kauas vuoristoon. Näin jopa ensimmäistä kertaa Kea-linnun, alppipapukaijan, joita on Uudessa Seelannissa paljon.

My last proper up-the mountain hike was at Arthur's Pass and it was the toughest one I've done so far. It was up to 1833 meters, though we started from 700 meters above sea level so 1100 meters had to be climbed. The path was super steep and at some parts we were climbing on big rocks. Sometimes you had to use hands to pull yourself up, that's how steep it was, at least for me and my short legs. Usually I prefer to hike alone but this time I joined other people I met at beginning since the path was making me a bit anxious. After hiking for three hours we were at the Avalanche Peak and had a view to the whole pass. I even saw a Kea, an alpine parrot that is common in New Zealand.

Artturin solan jälkeen paikat, joissa vierailin olivat nättejä, mutta mikään ei aiheuttanut sen suurempia tunteita. Rakastan vuoristomaisemia, joten pohjoisrannikko ei ihastuttanut sen suuremmin. Näin muutamia mielenkiintoisia juttuja ja nautin lämpimästä säästä.

After Arthur's Pass the places I visited were nice but nothing was spectacular to me. I love the mountains so the north coast was too flat for me. I saw some interesting things though and I enjoyed the warm weather.

Sitten olikin aika hyvästellä eteläsaari, jossa olen viettänyt viimeiset 4,5 kuukautta. Otin Pictonista lautan Wellingtoniin, maan pääkaupunkiin, joka sijaitsee pohjoissaaren etelärannikolla. Siellä vietin viimeiset neljä päivää.

Then it was time to say goodbye to the South Island, where I had spent the last 4,5 months. I took a ferry from Picton to Wellington, the capital city that lies on the south part of the north island. There I spend my last four days in New Zealand.

Wellington oli hyvä paikka lopettaa seikkailut tässä maassa. Join paljon kahvia, kävin museoissa ja rannalla ja treffasin ihmisiä, jotka olin tavannut aikasemmin tässä maassa. Opin myös, että Uudessa Seelannissa on joka päivä useita maanjäristyksiä, mutta ne ovat niin pieniä, ettei niitä tunne.

Wellington was a good place to end my NZ travels. I drank a lot of coffee, visited museums, hit the beach and catched up with people whom I had met here before. I also learned that there is multiple earthquakes in New Zealand every day, you just don't feel them since they're small.

Vuosi sitten tähän aikaan olin ensimmäistä kertaa tässä maassa ja kaksi viikkoa hujahti ohi niin, että tiesin tulevani tänne takaisin. Tällä kertaa vietin Uudessa Seelannissa kauemmin kuin tarkoitukseni oli, sillä en vain ollut valmis lähtemään. Nyt kuitenkin tuntuu, että olen nähnyt ja tehnyt, mitä halusinkin. Olen valmis tutustumaan uuteen maahan ja kulttuuriin. Vietnam on seuraavana listalla.

Quite exactly a year ago I visited this country the first time and two weeks went by so quickly that I knew I would come back here. This time I stayed in New Zealand longer than I planned because I was just not ready to leave so soon. Now I feel that I saw and did the things I wanted and I'm ready to get to know a new country and culture. Vietnam is the next on line.
