Siem Reap oli viimeinen kohteeni Kambodzassa ja odotinkin sitä kovasti. Sieltä kun pääsi päiväretkelle huikeisiin temppeleihin.
Siem Reap was my final destination in Cambodia and I had been waiting for it a lot. That is the place where you can do a day trip to amazing temples.
Koska saavuin aamulla Siem Reapeen, päätin sen päivän vain tutustua kaupunkiin ja selvittää, miten temppeleihin pääsee. Pyörä olisi ollut halvin vaihtoehto ja yleensä menen halvimmalla, mutta nyt pyöräily kuumassa ilmassa sadekuurojen saattelemana ei houkutellut. Varasin itselleni Tuk tuk-kyydin, joka maksoi 15euroa ja oli käytettävissäni koko päivän.
Because I arrived to Siem Reap in the morning, I decided to spend my first day getting to know the city and figure out how to get to the temples. A bicycle would have been the cheapest option and I usually go for the cheapest one. But this time the idea of cycling in the heat with a chance of rain didn't appeal to me. So I booked a Tuk tuk-driver for 15$ and he was going to drive me around the whole day.
Olimme sopineet lähdön aamukahdeksaksi, mutta vettä tuli kuin aisaa. Yhdeltätoista olin jo hermot kireällä, koska tämä oli viimeinen mahdollisuuteni nähdä temppelit. Mutta sitten taivas selkeni ja pääsimme lähtemään.
We had scheduled to leave at 8am but it was pouring rain. At 11am I was getting anxious because it was my last chance to see the temples. Then suddenly, the sky cleared out and we were on our way.
Ensimmäisenä oli Angkor Wat-temppeli, joka on rakennettu 1100-luvulla Suryavarman II:n valtiontemppeliksi ja pääkaupungiksi. Temppeli olikin mielettömän suuri ja sen ympäri kävelemiseen meni yli tunti.
First temple I visited was Angkor Wat. It was built in the 12th century in order to be a temple and capital for Suryavarman the 2nd. The temple was huge and it took me over an hour to walk around it.
Angkor Watista suuntasimme Bayoniin. Tämä buddhatemppeli on rakennettu myös 1100-luvulla ja se sijaitsee vanhan Angkor Thom-kaupungin keskiössä.
From Angkor Wat we continued to Bayon. This buddha temple was also built in the 12th century and it's the central temple of the ancient city Angkor Thom.
Viimeinen kohteemme oli Ta Phrom, jota on käytetty myös elokuvan Tomb Raider kuvauspaikkana. Ta Phrom on rakennettu 1100-1200-luvuilla Buddhaluostariksi. Tämä oli näistä kolmesta temppelistä ainoa, jota ei ole juurikaan korjailtu. Pidin Ta Phromista eniten, koska se henki entisajan tunnelmaa viidakon keskellä.
Our final destination was Ta Phrom, which is a temple were the movie Tomb Raider was partly shot. This buddha temple was built in the late 12th and early 13th century. It is the only temple of these three that hasn't been reconstructed much. I liked Ta Phrom the most because you could just feel the the ancient times in the middle of the jungle.
Temppeleitä olisi ollut enemmänkin, mutta nämä olivat ne vaikuttavimmat ja vaikka tykkään historiallisia rakennuksia katsellakin, niin luulen että useampi temppeli olisi käynyt puuduttavaksi. Kun pääsin viimeisestä temppelistä ulos, alkoi kaatosade. Näin kotimatkalla pari reissaria polkemassa sateessa ja olin tyytyväinen tuk tuk-valintaani.
There would have been more temples to see and as much as I like exploring historical buildings, I think more temples would have been mind numbing at the end. When I got out of the last temple, it started to pour rain. On our way home I saw few backpackers riding their bikes in the rain and I was happy I chose tuk tuk.
Siem Reap kaupunkina oli hyvin turisteille tehty, lukuisine ravintoloineen ja hierontasalonkineen. Kaupungissa ei juurikaan ollut tehtävää tai nähtävää. Siellä on kuulemma hyvä ja vilkas yöelämä, mutta enpä käynyt sitä tsekkaamassa.
Siem Reap itself as a city was clearly made for tourists with it restaurants and massage places. There wasn't much to see or to do. I heard there is a good nightlife there but I didn't check it out.
Kaiken kaikkiaan Kambodza oli mielenkiintoinen maa ja oli mielenkiintoista nähdä se nyt, kun se vasta kehittää itseään turistikohteena. 10 vuoden päästä maa voi näyttää hyvinkin erilaiselta. Vaikka kaipailin välillä juttuseuraa muista matkaajista, niin toisaalta maa oli täydellinen kohde viettää omaa aikaa ja keskittyä omiin ajatuksiin, ainakin näin sadekaudella. Kuivan kauden aikaan hostelleissa ja kaduilla saattaakin olla enemmän elämää. Loppujen lopuksi olisin voinut jäädä pidemmäksi aikaa. Paljon olisi ollut vielä nähtävää ja maa on naurettavan halpa. Oikein sattui, kun varasin ensimmäisen hostelliyön Uudesta Seelannista. Yksi yö maksaa kolminkertaisen summan Kambodzaan verrattuna. Mutta täytyy unohtaa raha ja miettiä kaikkia niitä kauniita vuoria, joihin pääsen kiipeämään.
All in all, Cambodia was an interesting country to see now, when it's still developing itself as tourist attraction. In ten years it might look totally different. Even though there were days when I could've use someone to talk to, it was a good place to have a little time of my own and concentrate on my own thoughts, at least now that is was rainy season. Maybe when it's high season there's more life in the hostels and on the streets. In the end, I could've stayed there longer. I'm sure there would have been much more to see and the country is ridiculously cheap. It hurt to book my first hostel night online in New Zealand. One night was three times the amount I paid in Cambodia. But it's not about the money. It's about the beautiful mountains I get to hike.
